The Civility Summit brought together police, homeless and formerly homeless youth, residents, business leaders, public safety leaders, and social service providers to discuss mutual respect, community values and community safety. We heard from the Portland Police Bureau about their walking beat officers, their relationship building style of policing and the successes in improved community relationships and reduced crime.
Attendees had the opportunity to talk about the steps they would take personally to improve the city’s public spaces. One important action endorsed by many was to support the police in this style of policing as it builds community, reduces conflict and reduces use of the criminal justice resources unless really needed for public safety.
We have set up a CivilityPDX Facebook page to highlight ongoing efforts to increase civility in our public spaces. Please follow us there for updates.
